Upon completion of active tooth movement, the teeth are held in their final position by retainers. Retainers can be either fixed (a wire bonded to the teeth) or removable. Dr. Bilodeau will recommend the best type for holding the correction of your particular occlusion. Retainers should be worn as prescribed to offer the best chance of maintaining your result.
Removable Retainer
This type of retainer most often consists of an acrylic plate with a circumferential wire around the teeth. It can be removed for cleaning, brushing and flossing of the teeth and special occasions. You will be given a case to keep it in when it is not in your mouth. Do not leave it on a food tray or wrap it in a napkin.
Fixed Retainer

This type of retainer is most often used in the lower arch because of ease of placement and the tendency of lower teeth to move (relapse) with growth or aging. Each tooth is attached to this retainer to prevent movement. If you feel one of these attachments is loose, please call us for a repair visit. It should go without saying that excellent care and cleaning of the retainer is needed.
